Conformity

I knew this was something I was going to have to address as soon as I begun work on the Intern Project.

Dictionary.com defines conformity as “to be or become similar in form, nature, or character.”  We live in a society that praises those who are the same and condemns those who are different. Conforming, becoming another clone in this diseased world, is what we hate the most.

However, I see a lot of people who try be different, just for the sake of being different. If you like a certain thing, let’s say a popular song, but you deny that you like it simply for the sake of being “different” you are not being true to yourself. There is nothing wrong with liking something that is popular as long as you actually enjoy it and not just because society tells you are SUPPOSED TO LIKE IT. There is a big difference that a lot of people miss.

I have had a few people tell me that they would like to join The Intern Project but they do not want to conform. In basic terms they are saying that believing in “nonconformity” is conforming, this is bullshit, and they do not understand what they are saying. Let me tell you The Project forces nothing on you. We are a group of unique individuals, with one thing uniting us. That is, the acknowledgment that society breeds mediocrity and we will not be oppressed by it.

In the future I will be sharing my own philosophies, but by no means do you have to listen to them, I simply offer them as a model that works for me, it is up to you to decide if it will work for you.

  1. Fuck conformity… Fuck the norm… Fuck blending in… I completely understand and agree with this sorrowful fad that unfortunately has overcome the general population. It is good to be unique… it is excellent to be different… I would NEVER want to look the same… dress the same… act the same as someone else. Mister Morgue your words are of purest wisdom! I admire you deeply.

I’m a Hardcore punk Goth rocker Headbanger with emo aspects, And I’m proud of it .\/. btw: for me there’s a 2nd reason why I joined, to learn those hard words:D

  3. Claudia Thorn says:

I don’t know if I’m goth, emo or just weird, but I use these similar trends to find people like me. It’s like a calling card. Another person with common interests could easily spot me out. Other people wisely keep away. I’m not saying cloning is awesome, but a little comformity is useful in a big world.

    • That sounds more like similarity, not conformity. Having similar interests, tastes, and views, not simply trying to be like anyone else. People can have these similar characteristics but still be just as freely creative and unique to themselves as an individual. Conformity kinda stomps that out.

  4. Rebekah says:

Why do people feel the need to “fit in” with society? Are they afraid that they’ll be tormented if they do not? Are they afraid that they’ll never find friends? I find it rather ignorant to “follow the crowd” and do what everyone else does. I like being myself, and that is all I am meant to be. I have been tormented throughout my entire life because I did not follow conformity. Well…that, and for the fact that I am naturally…”different”. I enjoy darkness, a dark image, dark music, and deep thoughts. I enjoy thinking outside the box, when other’s pretend to think like others. Just think about it…if we all started to look, act, talk, and think like each other, who would be the only induvidual in this world? No one…

  5. Syd says:

conformity is the worst part about this world and it could just kiss my autistic ass!

  8. Renee Crosbie says:

First off, it is glaringly apparent that you are a non-conformist, from your temperment, personality and appearance right down to how you process and perceive the world, as well as all the hamster-heads in it. It’s refreshing to see an individual (even if but only breifly) address the subject of conformity without inserting intentional self bias. This is noteworthy because it is so fucking rare. If you and I were to stand side by side… we would look like the quintessential ying & yang. In appearance I look like a white middleclass soccer mom. As a result I am often a magnet for this type of humming pigeon. These people are quick to flee the scene upon discovering that I’m not “the same” as they are.(so sad) On the flip side, when I meet persons whom I share commonality of interests, enjoyments, or that simply find myself intrigued by… they are usually firmly entrenched in a genre or a “look” that personifies their ideals and views. When I say entrenched, I mean sodden and soggy as if their inner psyche consists entirely of anti-social sponge filled by the overspill of some underground “movement”. So soild are their aversions for the “norm”, that the mere sight of my average house frow appearance sends their lips into a sneer. It makes me snicker. How threatening can this really be? Watch out boys, here comes Suzi-Q home maker…Booooo boooo! ( Ah hahha)
My family are confused by the fact that my closest friends are such an eclectic hodge podge. Some are tie and slack wearing professionals at unversities, while others have machettied their way through the common stereo type and sport bright purple hair and have snot catchers run through their septums.
Thank you for turning a light on the riddiculous. What ought to be simple and obvious often becomes convoluted by imps of social fear. There is just such a mini social terrorist in each of us. What will we each choose to do with it? Give it blind power & let it rule? Condem & strangle the life from it? Personally I say, accept it, study it, embrace it, learn how to use it, and become whole.

I think you are probably one of the most intellectual men I have yet to see here online! I respect you for your honesty and your bravery. You stand up for what you believe! You don’t allow religion or politics rule your judgments about your life or who you are. Morgue you are a true work of art. The Gods put extra effort into you. I believe in the gods.. I’ll never bow down to men. I completely understand what you are saying Morgue. You are right! Seems everyone is just going with each wave as it comes. NO one seems to try to take the rapids. Always the easy way, ( for instance, they care about what everyone else thinks of them.) And so on. I’m very proud of your cause Morgue. I hope that we can be friends. I also am very interested learning more about you. Thank you for being YOU! And for standing up and saying what’s on your mind. To me you are an angel to freedom. To open our minds and think outside of the box for a change. I’ve said enough. :) Take Care dearest Morgue! ~goldy~Mum~Angey ;)

  10. Zero says:

I agree with Morgue, and I don’t feel like I am conforming to his opinion simply because he is saying what I also happen believe. Supporting like minded individuals does not make you just another blind consumer, it makes you more human. Submitting to the status quo, of anything, dehumanizes you because it takes away from your individual potential. While terrors of men is an excellent source of information I enjoy, I do not let it dictate my life in anyway and if anyone else feels that way can agree that Morgue is worth your support.

  11. Norm says:

People should think more about working on themselves rather than trusting in the opinions of other people to define who they are and where they stand in life!

How can you claim to “hate the conformists opressing you” when you do all you can in your power to make sure your actions are the exact opposite of theirs? Is that not still letting them dictate what you do with your life?

  12. Beka R. says:

Ooooo- I have an excellent question to pose here for all: Ask yourself, are you a bandwagoner or are you an independently thinking individualist?

Haha…. I’m @ my temp job now that gives me some thinking time to kill. ‘My mind is like sex; it has an insatiable need to be fully stimulated’-(BR)

    • Renee says:

      Beka,

(“‘My mind is like sex; it has an insatiable need to be fully stimulated’”)

This world needs more like you in it!

  13. Beka R. says:

Wow! Now I have a full spectrum of your intriguing intellectuality by observation. Well said for the masses dear! Boy… Did this come in handy for me this morning! Most ppl, not fully understanding think WE are the crazy’s & psychos – could I say by mass misconception! …. Also I will be sure even moreso never to underestimate your mind/thinking! :D

  14. M says:

This makes a lot of sense.

In my opinion, some people adopt a way of being (a culture, they could be the so-called-goths) because they think it is different, and they want to be as different as they can, but they just end up becoming a fake stereotype instead of being themselves. (For example, you said that about popular songs, some people actually like them, but they will not admit it because “they only listen to rock and metal”).
I don’t know if what I said made sense, and sorry for my poor grammar, my english isn’t that good get :/.
